Turkey Not to Recognize Syrian Presidency Elections
The Turkish Foreign Affairs Ministry, after the USA and United Kingdom, declared that Turkey would not recognize the presidency elections in Syria.
The Turkish Foreign Affairs Ministry made a written statement regarding the presidency elections in Syria on 3 June 2014, which was considered disrespectful to the international society. The statement goes as follows: “When half of the population was discharged from their homelands and people were exposed to government forces’ attacks without discrimination, such an election is not only invalid but also violates the Geneva Convention, which forms the basis of the attempts towards probable solutions to establish a temporary government based on joint consent. Under these conditions, such an election is impossible to be taken seriously.”
The USA and United Kingdom declared last week that they would not recognize the elections in Syria, as the Washington Press Consultant, Jay Carney, claimed that it would be nothing but a caricature of democracy. The British Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mark Simmonds, also stated that Assad’s aim of holding elections might be an attempt to preserve his dictatorship.
